1,600+ Christians answered why they don’t share their testimonies…

In a multigenerational survey on evangelism, Jesus Film Project® interviewed over 1,600 Christians on their personal approach to evangelism – sharing their testimonies. Fewer than 50% shared their testimonies/engaged in spiritual topics with those who already shared the faith while Christians seldom shared their faith with those who would disagree with the survey respondent.

What caused such a dismal response?

Fear was the #1 response. Fear of losing valuable relationships and creating unnecessary tension. While some felt ill-equipped, they expressed they felt bound by the fear they would have to answer tough questions or uncomfortable objections too difficult to navigate. Fear of rejection, afraid of being pushy, and scared to start an argument were common threads woven throughout the other responses.

It stands to reason than that you too may wrestle with fear. I know I certainly did when the idea of writing my testimony came up! Does it help you to know that someone else’s faith and eternal life isn’t dependent on our performance? God does the heavy lifting while our little outreaches and conversations support the journey.

Whether your sharing starts someone’s faith walk, encourages a decision to follow Jesus, or softens someone’s heart, God causes the growth. So you’re free to simply share your faith/tell your testimony and in fact, enjoy the testimonies of others! The vulnerability and courage to share will bring much needed unity.
